Jack frost festival
Jack was running so fast the Northern Lights couldn't keep up with him. His heart was pounding, and he was filled with excitement. It was only two days to the Jack Frost Festival in PEI Canada and Jack couldn't wait. Finished with his work of finding strays homes before Christmas early this year Jack had decided to take some time to himself and go to this festival in his honor. He wondered what kind of adventure he might have on this frozen island paradise, because Jack Frost never went anywhere without an adventure happening.
Jack landed near Charlottetown’s harbour, Peak's Quay, and made his way up through the quiet streets. Passing by shop fronts, Jack was suddenly stopped in his tracks by the mournful cry of an electric guitar coming from a nearby coffee shop. Jack had to flinch back simply because of the pure power coming from the instrument. The small dog looked and saw a cat sitting by the café doors, he wondered how the feline could handle the high-pitched squeal coming from the steal strings of the guitar. Jack decided to say ‘hello’, so he wandered over to the cat, being careful to avoid the wave of heat coming from the fire inside the small room.
Jack yipped a ‘hello’ to the cat who raised her hair a little in response before looking around. When she spotted Jack, the blue grey cat unfolded herself gracefully and walked over to the ice dog.
"Jack Frost, you’re a longways from home." The cat purred; her Norwegian accent was impossible to miss.
Jack was not sure if he should be offended by her silky tone or not, so he wagged the tip of his tail.
"I could say the same about you,"
The cat looked surprised and then gave a deep, throaty purr.
"You noticed my accent?"
"I wouldn't be a very good Jack Frost if I missed an accent that thick." Jack smirked.
"A very good Jack Frost? You mean there is more than one?"
"It's a long story,"
The cat stared at him with stormy blue eyes.
"It sounds the sort of yarn that would be worth a listen."
Her word play made Jack wag his tail. At that moment, the boy who was playing the guitar exited the coffee shop. His black hair blew wildly around his face and his eyes were the same piercing blue as the deep Atlantic sea which cradled the small island. He leaned down and patted the cat.
"Come on Silverbell let's go."
Jack stood up and perked his ears.
"I like your name." He said to the cat,
"Thanks." She responded.
Suddenly the boy turned around and looked at Jack, the dog backed up as the boy walked toward him. To Jack's shock the boy lifted him up and looked at him. Jack was relieved that the boy's hands were cold from the winter air or else this would have been bad because Jack would be melting.
"You're an interesting looking dog, are you lost?" The boy asked Jack before pulling him against his padded raincoat and cradling him. Once again Jack was grateful, no heat from the boy's body could reach the ice dog because of the rubber jacket.
Jack barked at Silverbell, "How does he recognize me? Most people don't realize I'm alive."
The cat shrugged, "Kai is an animal lover, perhaps that's it?"
Suddenly an older man with a slight white beard and mustache came over to the trio.
"If it isn't Jack Frost!" The man exclaimed,
Kai looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Did you just say Jack Frost?"
The older man smiled and gently took Jack from the boy which caused Jack to shed a sparkling shower of ice crystals.
"Of course, I said Jack Frost. It's been a long time since I have seen one of you little ice dog." The man said to Jack.
Jack raised a frosty eyebrow.
"Oh, of course you don't know me, but I knew Max a long time ago."
Jack wagged his tail dramatically, causing the road below him to turn to ice.
Max was the Jack Frost before Jack, and a very good friend of the little ice dog. When Max had found a human family, he wanted to adopt he had given up the title of 'Jack Frost.' After a harrowing journey Jack had discovered Max and the two had become friends.
"You want me to believe this little Jack Russell is the mythological Jack Frost?" Kai was saying,
"Yes."
The old man simply grinned and winked at Jack before placing him back on the ground.
"First mermaids now this?"
'Wait! Mermaids are real?' Jack thought, his eyes opening wide in wonder. The ice dog looked down at his frost studded paws and wagged his tail. 'Why not?'
God had created many weird and amazing creatures, Jack himself being one of them, so why not mermaids?
The old man looked at Jack.
"So little ice dog, how would you like to spend a few days on board a ship? Though not a schooner or famous ship like the Blue Nose 2, the Peggy's Smile is a beautiful ship. I named her myself in honor of the amazing Peggy's cove lighthouse."
Jack wagged his tail and spun in circles.
A winter aboard a ship!
