A squeaky door opening and footsteps awakened us from sleep and Mama leaned away, so as not to be seen by Miss Jodi. They hadn't officially met yet, so Mama wasn't too sure what this woman might do if we were discovered. But Miss Jodi was softly singing a song and then she quietly called, "Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Come on......here's your supper. Kitty, kitty, kitty? She waited a few minutes and then as she walked away to go into her house, she saw Mama. She and Mama made eye contact. They just looked at one another for a minute and then Miss Jodi said, "Well, Missie. I'm glad you finally made a home, here. You're welcome to stay as long as you like." Then she smiled and went into her house.

She was told by her school teachers that her vivid imagination was her greatest tool for creating wonderful stories. In her letters to family and friends, her visual description of events and experiences made them feel they had been right there with her, and wanting to read more!
