“Lots of fish today to fill an otter day!” Leni sang, sitting on his favorite fishing spot on Sea Shell Island, his brown fur shining in the sun. “Stop that singing!” Said a voice. “Who said that?” Leni asked. “Down here!” Said the voice. Leni looked down from his sitting spot. He couldn’t see anyone, but he could tell from the little voice that someone was upset. Then, Leni saw her! Right on the sand sat a little caterpillar. She did not look happy. Leni could tell by the big frown on her face. “This is a whale of a beautiful day for fishing and singing. What has your hooks all tangled up?” Leni asked. “Leave me alone,” said the caterpillar. “Here, have your troubles melt with a nice, sweet smelt!” Leni offered. “I don’t eat fish, and a smelt can’t help,” she replied sadly.

About the Book
Leni the sea otter is enjoying a beautiful day at his favorite fishing spot on Sea Shell Island when he meets Wings, a grumpy caterpillar. She is sad because she hasn’t yet turned into a butterfly, and she longs to be beautiful. Leni wants to help his new friend be happy and tries several ways to encourage her. In the end, Wings learns that true beauty comes from kindness and love. Through this picture book for children, author D.Y. Horan hopes to teach young children the power of tolerance, empathy, compassion, and the beauty that lies within our distinct differences. Leni and his friends are the voices that work hard to remind children nothing is more important than the power of love.
About the Author
D.Y. Horan has a B.A. in Philosophy from Boston College and an MBA from Babson College. She lives in Newbury, Massachusetts with her husband and two children.
