Suddenly, you see a person just in front of you getting ready to step out and cross the street. This person has not looked at the light to see if it’s safe to cross over. And it is not! Or maybe they do see the car approaching and believe they can take the chance and make it safely across anyway. As they take the first step out into the path of the car, knowing they will be hit and killed, you quickly pull them back to safety. Remember this person knew the light would keep them safe. But only if they saw and obeyed it. Instead, they chose to take the risk. Or maybe this was the person who was just preoccupied or distracted with all the noises around them. In either event, your quick action in pulling them back saved this one’s life. Now, right at first, now realizing what has just happened to them, and feeling your hands on them, they may be offended. So, they may respond harshly to you. But, as things settle down and they realize that you pulled them back to safety, because you saw the oncoming car and saved their life, they will thank you.
For those of us who are believers in Christ, God calls us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. And we are called to be bold and unashamed as we share with those who have not heard the truth, or do not know Him. In reading this wonderful God-given analogy, His points are clear. First of all, the traffic light is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And the street represents the place of crossing over into eternity. The approaching car represents death. What we do with Jesus, again referring to the traffic light, will determine whether we will cross over safely to an eternity in Heaven, or enter into eternity in Hell. As believers, He has opened our ears to hear and has given us eyes to see. And He wants each of us to stand ready and alert to “pull back to safety” any of those He puts in our own personal paths. And again, He calls us to be bold in our reaching out. Guided by His Holy Spirit in us and prayers for the lost, He works with us as we do reach out. Jesus, Himself, says, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” (John 12:32).
