It was 1991 a year Nitro will never forget. After seeing his mother overdose, he knew right then and there that life for him would never be the same. Nitro thought he could erase everything he seen that day out of his head, but he couldn’t. It always came back to haunt him. “Nitro, baby.” His mother called. “Yes mama” “Go get that belt that’s on the couch”, his mother told him. “Why Mama, I haven’t been bad in school today?” “Dammit! Don’t be asking me why, go get the god damn belt!” “Yes mama”, he replied. Nitro got the belt off the couch and made it back to his mother. She then told him to tie the belt around her arm. For what, he didn’t know. She screamed, “Nitro, pull the damn belt tight!” “I am mama” he replied. “Okay now go into the living room and watch TV.” Nitro did what his mother said with no questions asked. As he sat down on the living room floor, Nitro turned his head a little bit, not letting his mother catch him watching her, holding a little spoon up to the fire of a lit candle. His mother screamed, “Nitro!” He jumped up, a little bit frightened. “Boy watch TV like I told your ass to” she said. “Yes mama” he replied. Nitro’s mother seen him looking at her and what she was doing. She then picked up a plastic object in her hand which turned out to be a needle. She stuck the needle in her arm injecting the deadly poison into her veins. After feeling straight high, she leaned back into her chair like she was relaxing. Ten minutes later she tried to get out of the chair but fell back down, hard. Right then and there, Nitro knew something was wrong. His mother started knocking everything off the table and then fell to the floor. “Mama!” Nitro shouted at the top of his lungs and ran over to help her. She was on the floor shaking and jumping like a fish out of water. He didn’t know what was going on. He called out, “Mama, Mama, what’s wrong?” She didn’t respond back to him. He ran back into the living room, picked up the house phone and dialed 911. The operator answered, “911, what is your emergency?” “Yes, my mama is on the floor and she is not saying anything. I don’t know what’s wrong with her.” He responded. While Nitro is on the phone answering all the operator’s questions, he turned his head and looked at his mother to see if she was making any type of movement. “No Ma’am, she is not moving. “ “Okay, baby, hang on, we are sending some help,” the operator told Nitro. Nitro looked at his mother with tears snaking down his cheeks and said “Mama, GET UP! GET UP! You are scaring me.” Although her eyes were still open they were already clouded with death. He knew right then she was dead. He just stayed there and cried his heart out until help came. At the age of five, Nitro watched his mother take her own life, with her own hands, overdosed on heroin. Life was never the same for him. Now it’s a new era, called Crack Cocaine that will be sending a clear message throughout the city streets.
